“Effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on the quality of life of patients treated with radiotherapy for liver tumors”.

The consumption of hydrogen-rich water for 6 weeks reduced reactive oxygen metabolites in the blood and maintained blood oxidation potential. The Quality of Life (QOL) scores during radiotherapy were significantly improved in patients treated with hydrogen-rich water compared to patients receiving placebo water.

“…Hydrogen water administration improved the survival of mice with colon 26-induced cancer. Furthermore, hydrogen water enhanced cell apoptosis in cancer cells, resulting in a marked increase in the expression of p-AMPK, AIF and Caspase 3 in colon 26 cells. Hydrogen water also increased the inhibitory effect of 5-FU on colon 26 cells with spect to cell survival rate and anticancer functions. Additionally, high-content hydrogen water exhibited stronger antioxidative and anticancer activity than did the natural hydrogen water.”

Human tongue carcinoma cells were inhibited for either colony formation efficiencies or colony sizes by hydrogen water without significant inhibition to normal human tongue cells. Furthermore, hydrogen water caused growth inhibition, cell degeneration, and inhibition of invasion of human fibrosarcoma cells. Thus, neutral pH hydrogen water was shown to achieve tumor-preferential growth inhibition and tumor invasion together with scavenging of intracellular oxidants, and is expected as a preventive material against tumor progression and invasion.

Hydrogen protects rats from dermatitis caused by local radiation.

Hydrogen significantly reduced the severity of dermatitis, accelerated tissue recovery, and reduced the extent of radiation-induced weight loss in rats after a single dose of 15 or 20 Gy but not 25 Gy of radiation. Hydrogen was also protective from cumulative doses of 30 Gy delivered in three fractions, respectively. Hydrogen also protect HaCaT cells from radiation-induced injury, it could significantly inhibit ionizing injury.

Molecular hydrogen (hydrogen water) acts as a therapeutic antioxidant by selectively reducing hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and peroxynitrite (ONOO-). It has been well-known that ionising radiation (IR) causes oxidative damage and consequent apoptosis (cell-death) mainly due to the production of •OH that follows radiolysis of H(2)O. Our department reported the protective effect of H(2) in irradiated cells and mice for the first time, and this effect is well repeated by us and another laboratory in different experimental animal models.

”Biological Significance of Naturally Occurring Deuterium: The Antitumor Effect of Deuterium Depletion” Gábor Somlyai et al.
Deuterium depleted water (25 ppm) induced complete or partial tumor regression in dogs and cats with spontaneous malignancies, it was registered as anticancer for veterinary use in 1999 (Vetera-DDW-25 A.U.V., 13/99 FVM). The hypodermic preparation of the registered veterinary drug was successfully tested in clinical investigations.
A randomized, double blind controlled, human Phase II clinical trial with prostate cancer (Under the Hungarian Institute of Pharmacology No. 5621/40/95) was performed, which exhibited a significant difference between the control and treated groups with respect to the examined parameters, median survival time and the extension of life-span.
The study suggests that cells are able to regulate the D/H ratio and the changes in the D/H ratio can trigger certain molecular mechanisms having a key role in cell cycle regulation. The study further supposes that not the shift in the intracellular pH, but the concomitant increase in the D/H ratio is the real trigger for the cells to enter into S phase. The decrease of Deuterium concentration can intervene in the signal transduction pathways thus leading to tumor regression.

“A retrospective study of survival in breast cancer patients undergoing deuterium depletion in addition to conventional therapies”

Study comparing the survival of breast cancer in groups of conventional therapy compared to a group drinking Deuterium Depleted Water in addition to conventional cancer therapy.
There is increasing evidence that the heavy isotope of hydrogen, deuterium (D), has a pivotal role in cell signalling and that deuterium depletion through the replacement of normal drinking water with deuterium-depleted water (DDW) results in tumour necrosis. The impact of Deuterium depletion on breast cancer outcome was studied retrospectively. The normal daily water intake (150 ppm Deuterium) of 232 breast cancer patients was replaced with DDW (65-105 ppm Deuterium) for at least 91 days, without altering conventional treatment regimens. According to staging at initial diagnosis, patients with early stage breast cancer achieved a median survival time (MST) of 18.1 years, compared with 4.3 years in patients with advanced disease. The MST is pending in the subgroup of patients who were in remission at the start of DDW treatmen

“The naturally occurring isotope of hydrogen (1H), deuterium (2H), could have an important biological role. Deuterium depleted water delays tumor progression in mice, dogs, cats and humans. Hydratase enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle control cell growth and deplete deuterium from redox cofactors, fatty acids and DNA, which undergo hydride ion and hydrogen atom transfer reactions. A model is proposed that emphasizes the terminal complex of mitochondrial electron transport chain reducing molecular oxygen to deuterium depleted water (DDW); this affects gluconeogenesis as well as fatty acid oxidation. In the former, the DDW is thought to diminish the deuteration of sugar-phosphates in the DNA backbone, helping to preserve stability of hydrogen bond networks, possibly protecting against aneuploidy and resisting strand breaks, occurring upon exposure to radiation and certain anticancer chemotherapeutics. DDW is proposed here to link cancer prevention and treatment using natural ketogenic diets, low deuterium drinking water…”
